The Palais de la Méditerranée Unveils a New Era on the French Riviera

Overlooking the sparkling waters of the Baie des Anges, one of Nice’s most iconic landmarks has entered a remarkable new chapter. With its striking Art Deco façade adorned with sculpted female figures and seahorses, the Palais de la Méditerranée has long been a symbol of the glamour and elegance that define the French Riviera.

Following an extensive seven-month renovation and a €50 million investment by its Qatari owners, the legendary five-star hotel reopened its doors on June 4, revealing a sophisticated transformation that honors its rich heritage while embracing contemporary luxury.

Operated by Hyatt for more than a decade, the property has been carefully reimagined to meet the expectations of today’s discerning international travelers. The renovation encompasses all 145 guest rooms and 28 suites, each redesigned to combine modern comfort with understated elegance. Public spaces have also been completely refreshed, including a redesigned lobby and a new restaurant located beside the hotel’s celebrated indoor-outdoor swimming pool overlooking the Mediterranean Sea.

The vision behind the project was not to reinvent the landmark, but rather to elevate it while preserving its distinctive identity. The result is a seamless blend of historic character and contemporary refinement, where every detail reflects a deep respect for the building’s Art Deco legacy.

Throughout the hotel, guests will discover carefully restored architectural features, elegant stained-glass elements, vintage mirrors, and a magnificent mosaic inspired by the Mediterranean world. Shells, seaweed, and marine motifs subtly reference the property’s intimate connection with the sea, creating an atmosphere that feels both timeless and distinctly Riviera.

Yet the Palais de la Méditerranée is far more than a luxury hotel. It is a living piece of French Riviera history.

Originally inaugurated on January 10, 1929, during the height of the Roaring Twenties, the property quickly became one of the Côte d’Azur’s most glamorous destinations. Financed by American millionaire Frank Jay Gould—often associated with the extravagant lifestyle that inspired the era of The Great Gatsby—the complex originally housed a prestigious hotel, a casino, and entertainment venues that attracted aristocrats, celebrities, artists, and international high society.

Over the decades, the building has witnessed the evolution of the Riviera itself, experiencing periods of extraordinary success, closure, rebirth, and reinvention. Through it all, its magnificent façade has remained one of Nice’s most recognizable architectural treasures.

Today, following this ambitious renovation, the Palais de la Méditerranée once again stands at the forefront of luxury hospitality on the Mediterranean coast. Combining world-class service, contemporary elegance, and nearly a century of history, the hotel offers guests a rare opportunity to experience one of the French Riviera’s most storied addresses in an entirely new light.

As it approaches its centenary, the Palais de la Méditerranée continues to embody the timeless glamour of the Côte d’Azur—an enduring icon where heritage, luxury, and the Mediterranean art of living come together in perfect harmony.
